About Megger Low Resistance Ohmmeters
Megger low resistance ohmmeters are precision instruments that measure very low electrical resistance values, typically below 1 ohm. Accurate low resistance measurement is crucial in identifying faulty components to prevent overheating, energy loss, and malfunctions during a power surge.
Measurement Principle
These ohmmeters use a four-terminal (Kelvin) measurement technique to eliminate the effects of lead and contact resistances, providing highly accurate readings of very low resistances. A known current is passed through the component under test via the current leads, and the resulting voltage drop is measured across the voltage leads. The readings are then displayed digitally, allowing for easy interpretation.
Applications
Megger low resistance ohmmeters are utilised across various industries and applications, including:
- Electrical Utilities: Testing circuit breaker contacts, busbar joints, and switchgear to ensure reliable operation and safety.
- Manufacturing: Assessing the integrity of motor windings, coils, and welded joints to prevent equipment failures.
- Transportation: Ensuring the proper bonding and continuity of rail tracks and aircraft components.
- Renewable Energy: Verifying the effectiveness of lightning protection systems in wind turbines.
Megger low resistance ohmmeters are essential tools for electrical engineers, technicians, and maintenance personnel who require accurate and reliable low resistance measurements.
