About Radiodetection CAT & Genny Cable Detectors
Radiodetection CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool) and Genny (Signal Generator) are specialised cable detection tools used primarily in construction, utilities, and civil engineering to locate buried cables and pipes before excavation. These tools help prevent damage to underground utilities, ensuring worker safety and reducing costly service disruptions.
What They Measure and How They Work
CAT (Cable Avoidance Tool)
The CAT detects buried cables and pipes by picking up electromagnetic signals naturally emitted by live power cables or by signals induced by the Genny. It can operate in different modes:
- Power Mode: Detects naturally radiating signals from live electricity cables.
- Radio Mode: Identifies long-wavelength radio signals re-radiated by buried conductive utilities.
- Genny Mode: Works with the Genny signal generator to detect a specific induced frequency for better accuracy.
- Avoidance Mode: Simultaneously searches for Power, Radio, and Genny signals, providing a comprehensive scan of the area.
- Depth Mode (on some models): Estimates the depth of the buried utility when used with a Genny.
Genny (Signal Generator)
The Genny enhances the C.A.T's capability by emitting a specific signal that can be traced by the C.A.T. This is particularly useful for locating utilities that do not naturally emit detectable signals, such as metallic pipes or cables without current flow.
Where They Are Used
The C.A.T and Genny system is predominantly used in construction, civil engineering, and utility maintenance sectors to identify the location of underground utilities before excavation, thereby reducing the risk of injury to personnel and damage to infrastructure. Operators can perform area scans to detect various signals, allowing for safer digging practices. The system is also employed in surveying and mapping to accurately document the positions of subsurface utilities.
