FLIR E86 Advanced Thermal Imaging Camera
The FLIR E86 Advanced Thermal Imaging Camera is an infrared-imaging camera suitable for inspecting and troubleshooting buildings and electrical and mechanical equipment. Boasting a thermal sensitivity of 30mK (at 30°C with a 42° lens) and an IR resolution of 464x348px which provides 161, 472 measurement points and it can measure temperatures to an accuracy of ±2°C/2%. It supports the following temperature ranges:
- -20°C to +120°C
- 0°C to +650°C
- 300°C to 1500°C
The number of measurement points can be increased to 645,888 points using the camera’s UltraMax® Enhancement function. This function captures a series of radiometric images which are combined using an UltraMax® algorithm and a suitable FLIR analysis software program. Radiometric data is unaffected by this process. The UltraMax® Enhancement function is especially useful when inspecting small or distant components as it improves the cameras distance-to-spot ratio.

FLIR MSX Image Enhancement
The FLIR E86 also includes an MSX® Image Enhancement function which can be used to improve the depth and clarity of thermal images. This function works by overlaying visual details (captured using the integrated 5MP visual camera with a fixed focus and LED light) onto thermal images. The MSX® Image Enhancement function improves the ease with which the user can identify the sources of faults.
In addition to the aforementioned enhancement functions, the E86 includes a 1-4x continuous digital zoom, three spotmeters (in live mode), and three area meters (in live mode).
The user can build reports, images and videos can be saved with a GPS tag, voice annotations and/or on-screen text; the user can also sketch onto thermal images via the 640x480px display. Furthermore, it is compatible with FLIR’s reporting and analysis software programs, including FLIR Thermal Studio (included) and FLIR Thermal Studio Pro (NOT included).
Radiometric, IR and visual images and footage are saved to the E86’s 8GB SD card. Radiometric images are saved as JPEG files. Additionally, the user can stream radiometric, IR and visual footage via the Wi-Fi interface which can be used to connect to a smartphone or tablet.
Communication Interfaces & METERLiNK Compatibility
In addition to a Wi-Fi interface, the camera also supports USB, Bluetooth and DisplayPort interfaces. Furthermore, METERLiNK compatibility means it can communicate with FLIR tools such as clamps and multimeters. Data gathered using FLIR’s tools can be saved with thermal footage and images.
Ergonomic Design
The FLIR E86 Thermal Camera's simple folder and naming structure ensures the user can recall recorded files quickly and easily. The fast-responding touchscreen display, practically placed menu buttons, and intuitive user interface also improve its ease of use. Its pistol-shaped design means it can be operated using a single hand.
Furthermore, the unit has been drop-tested from 3m (6.6ft) to ensure it is suitable for use in rugged environments. Additionally, the camera has a typical battery life of over 2.5 hours.
Inspection Route Camera Function
The Inspection Route Camera function guides the user through a pre-planned inspection route, ensuring he/she gathers images and data at specified inspection points. Images and data are automatically organised.
The inspection route is constructed using the Route Creator Plug-in for FLIR’s Thermal Studio Pro Software (NOT included); thermographers can add as many inspection points as necessary which may be arranged to provide maximum efficiency. The Inspection Route Camera function is ideal for thermographers who perform a large number of inspections regularly as it improves inspection organisation and efficiency and simplifies reporting.

The FLIR AutoCal Lenses are interchangeable. The FLIR E86 will auto-calibrate to accommodate the attached lens; this ensures that the camera will always deliver high-quality images and precise thermal measurements regardless as to which FLIR AutoCal Lens is being used. In addition to this, it includes four selectable focus modes: Continuous Laser Distance Meter (LDM), One-Shot LDM, One-Shot Contrast and Manual.
The FLIR AutoCal Lenses are optimised for various purposes:
- 14°, 29mm lens: a telephoto lens with a narrow field-of-view facilitating precise focus and crisp imaging of distant targets
- 24°, 17mm lens: provides a 24° x 18° FOV allowing the user to remain at a safe distance from energised equipment whilst providing a crisp focus when viewing smaller targets
- 42°, 10mm lens: this wide-angle lens provides a large FOV allowing the user to gather maximum information in a single image; this is ideal when inspecting buildings and roofs
- 80°, 5mm Lens: delivers an ultra-wide field-of-view allowing inspectors to capture large targets and/or inspect in tight spaces
FLIR FlexView DFOV Lens
Instantly switch from a 24° wide view lens to a 14° telephoto lens with FLIR’s FlexView Dual Field of View Lens: survey locations and take accurate temperature readings without changing lenses. In addition to saving time and space, the FLIR FlexView DFOV Lens can put 2.8x pixels on your target using optical zoom. The FLIR FlexView DFOV Lens lowers your risk of missing anomalies, allowing you to perform efficient, accurate inspections.
The FLIR E86 Thermal Camera is an adaptable, easy-to-use and ergonomic infrared-imaging camera optimised for troubleshooting and inspecting buildings and electrical and mechanical equipment.
