The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester is available in four premium kits (see ‘What’s Included?’) optimised for various applications (see ‘Applications’). These kits differ from the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester Standard Kits in that they include an additional rubber probe, a larger nylon bag, and headphones optimised for use with hard hats.
UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester Description
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester utilises ultrasound technology in order to troubleshoot and inspect electrical, mechanical and tube/ pipe systems. It can be used to find compressed air, steam leaks, mechanical failures and electrical phenomenon such as corona, arcing and tracking.
Changes in ultrasonic emissions can indicate an impending problem. As ultrasound is both localised and directional, the operator can detect the sources of faults by following volume increases. In addition to listening to changes in ultrasonic volume through the included headphones, the operator is able to view ultrasound levels via the eight-position sensitivity dial with decibel indications and an LED bar graph. The LED bar graph can be used to estimate decibel levels as each LED light equates to 3dB.
In some cases, such as when inspecting bearings, ultrasonic technology is able to locate potential faults before traditional thermal and vibration methods would be able to detect these failings. Early diagnosis of potential issues reduces the downtime required to address these problems and, therefore, also reduces associated repair costs.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester is an easy-to-use, efficient and effective inspection, maintenance and troubleshooting tool. It is suitable for use in noisy environments and, as such, is supplied with a rubber focusing probe which limits the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester’s reception field, allowing the operator to follow the relevant ultrasound regardless of ambient noise.

Electrical Inspection
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can detect corona discharge, tracking and arcing emitted by switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, bussbars, relays, junction boxes and insulators.
The electrical phenomenon above produce ultrasound at the point of emission; this can be heard as a frying/ buzzing sound through the supplied headphones. The volume of the frying/buzzing sound increases the closer the user gets to the source of the electrical discharge, allowing him/her to find electrical faults simply and quickly.
Mechanical Inspection
Cavitation in pumps, compressor valve leakage and missing gear teeth can be identified and located using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester. This instrument can be used to inspect pumps, motors, compressors, gears and gearboxes.
Bearing Testing
Monitoring sound quality and amplitude changes provide a method of identifying the earliest stages of bearing failure. The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester is able to detect signs of bearing failure even earlier than traditional vibration and thermal equipment. Furthermore, using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester to detect these faults requires no prior experience or training and only one test point.
Steam Trap Inspection
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can be used to inspect steam traps while they are in operation. This instrument converts the ultrasonic elements of steam traps into an audible range, as a result, the operator can utilise the included headphones to locate faults by following volume increases. Additionally, noise levels are illustrated on the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester’s display.
Using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester it is possible to detect blow-by, machine gunning, oversized traps and line blockages.
Heat Exchanger, Boilers and Condensers
Using a vacuum, pressure or ultratone testing method and the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester, the operator can detect leaks in condenser and heat exchange tubes.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can be used to inspect tubes in noisy environments, using one of the three following methods:
- Vacuum: listen for ultrasonic sound caused by air being drawn into the leak
- Pressure: utilise air pressure around the tube/ pipe system and scan for the rushing sound caused by the leaking pipe; this method is suitable for inspecting systems whilst they are offline
- Ultratone: when the shell side of the exchanger is flooded with ultrasound (using a powerful high-frequency transmitter) this noise will follow the path of the leak, by tracing this sound the user can locate the leaking pipe; this method is particularly useful when inspecting heat exchanger tubes
Valve Seat Leak Detection
Use the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester to check valves for leaks or blockages whilst they are in operation.
Pressure and Vacuum Leak Detection
When gases such as air, oxygen and nitrogen pass through a leak they create a turbulent flow characterised by detectable high-frequency components. This sound can be heard through the headphones and will increase in volume the closer the operator gets to the source of the leak. Ultrasonic noise is also indicated via the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester’s display.
By limiting the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester’s reception field using the rubber focusing probe, the operator can shield the instrument from conflicting ultrasound ambient noise, allowing him/her to follow the ultrasonic emissions relevant to his/her inspection.
