UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector – Intrinsically Safe Description
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector utilises ultrasonic technology to locate electrical and mechanical faults, leaks, compressed air and faulty steam traps in various pneumatic, electrical and mechanical systems. It is easy-to-use and optimised for point-and-shoot troubleshooting.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector is equipped with a bi-modal analogue meter with a meter-switch consisting of two functions that allow the user to tailor the ultrasonic instrument to the application:
- Logarithmic metering: enhanced for leak and fault detection, this function provides a real-time response
- Linear mode: this function is optimised for bearing and mechanical monitoring and provides a slow, averaging response to determine a stabilised reading
In addition to this, the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector is also equipped with a Frequency Tuning function allowing the user to set the instrument to the frequency specific to the problem, whilst reducing interference from other ultrasound frequencies. As a result, the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector can be tailored to various problems, expanding its scope-for-use.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector has a frequency range of 20 to 100 kHz. Additionally, the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector is designed not to respond to low-frequency noises prevalent in most factory and plant environments. As it is only sensitive to ultrasonic frequencies, it can be used effectively in noisy factories and plants.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector also features a ten-turn sensitivity adjust dial with a wide sensitivity range, again ensuring that the user is able to follow the frequency most relevant to his/her application. Moreover, the supplied Trisonic™ Scanning Module also improves the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector’s sensitivity and allows it to scan the air for ultrasounds. The Trisonic™ Module is comprised of a phased array of three transducers.
Ultrasonic frequencies detected by the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector are heterodyned into an audible range thereby providing accurate sound reproduction which can be heard using the included noise-isolating headphones which are specifically designed for noisy, heavy-duty, industrial environments.
Frequency readings can also be viewed via the aforementioned bi-modal analogue meter; alternatively, it is possible to connect the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector to a vibration analyser and/or sound recording device via the heterodyned output in order to view/ hear readings.
Utilising the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector’s aforementioned methods of data reporting the user can monitor changes in ultrasonic emissions in order to detect leaks, blockages and impending issues before they become critical. This allows the operator to affect the necessary repairs more quickly, thereby reducing the amount of downtime required, as well as the associated repair/ maintenance costs.
Applications
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System can be used to perform the following applications:
- Pressure and vacuum leak detection
- Checking hydraulic valve bypass
- Locating exhaust system leaks
- Inspecting heat exchangers, boilers and condensers
- Valve and steam trap inspections
- Bearing testing: prevent common forms of failure such as over-lubrication
- Gear/ gearbox inspections
- Locating cockpit window/ hatch leaks
- General mechanical inspections
- Tanks, pipes, leak testing
- Electrical inspections: detect electrical phenomena such as corona, tracking and arcing
Pressure and Vacuum Leak Detection
Turbulent flow with detectable high-frequencies is created when gases such as air, oxygen and nitrogen pass through a leak opening. This noise (heard through the headset as a rushing sound) will get louder the closer the user gets to the source of the leak.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector can be shielded from conflicting ultrasonic ambient noise using the supplied rubber focusing probe which limits the instrument’s reception field.
Valve Leak Detection
Check valves for leaks or blockages whilst they are in use.
Heat Exchanger, Boilers and Condensers
It is possible to check heat exchanger tunes and condenser tubes for leaks using three methods:
- Vacuum: listen for the sound caused by air drawn into the leak
- Pressure: utilising the air pressure around the system, scan for the rushing sound caused by the leak while the system is offline
- Ultratone: flood the shell side of the exchanger with ultrasound using a powerful high-frequency transmitter, the sound will follow the path towards the leak allowing the user to locate the faulty tube; this method is particularly useful when using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System to check heat exchanger tubes
Steam Trap Inspection
Steam traps can be inspected for blow-by, machine-gunning, and line blockages whilst they are in operation. It is also possible to find oversized traps using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System. As ultrasonic frequencies are converted into an audible range, the user can locate the sources of these faults using the headset. Ultrasonic frequencies are also viewable via the ultrasonic detector's bi-modal analogue meter.
Bearing Testing
Identify the earliest stages of bearing failure by monitoring sound quality and amplitude changes; this method of testing bearings requires no training and only one test point. Using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System, it is possible to identify and locate bearing failures earlier than traditional heat and vibration equipment.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System can be used to prevent over-lubrication, one of the most common causes of bearing failure.
Mechanical Inspection
Find cavitation in pumps, compressor valve leakage, and missing gear teeth using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Inspection System. This ultrasonic equipment is suitable for checking pumps, motors, compressors, gears and gearboxes.
Electrical Inspection
Check switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, busbars, relays, junction boxes and insulators for arcing, tracking and corona.
Electrical phenomena, such as above, produce ultrasound at the point of emission; when heterodyned this can be heard as a frying/ buzzing noise. The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector and Trisonic™ Module can be used to scan the atmosphere, allowing the user to find the source of the electrical discharge by following volume increases.
Intrinsically Safe
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 2000ATEX Ultrasound Detector and supplied accessories can be used in ATEX and EX areas without the need for work permits. They are compliant with the following:
- FM & CSA approved intrinsically safe: Class I, division 1, groups A-B-C-D
- ATEX group IIC
