The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester is also available as part of a selection of Premium Kits, which differ in regards to the inclusion of an additional rubber probe, a larger nylon bag, and headphones optimised for use with hard hats.
UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester Description
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester is a troubleshooting and inspection tool designed to detect and measure ultrasound emissions in order to verify the functionality of machines, electrical systems and steam traps, as well as find leaks.
As mentioned above, the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester utilises ultrasound technology allowing it to find compressed air and steam leaks as well as prevent machine failure. It features an eight-position sensitivity dial with decibel indications, as well as an LED bar graph for which each LED light equates to approximately 3dB. The LED bar graph can be used to calculate decibel levels.
Changes in ultrasound emissions can indicate an impending problem. Early detection of this change allows the user to affect the necessary repairs before the issue becomes critical, thereby saving money and reducing downtime. As ultrasound is directional and localised, the individual is able to pinpoint the source of this noise by following volume increases, making the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester very easy-to-use. Additionally, this instrument has been optimised for use in noisy environments and is equipped with a rubber focusing probe for limiting the instrument's reception field and thereby allowing it to follow ultrasonic emissions despite background noise.

Pressure and Vacuum Leak Detection
Gases (such as air, oxygen and nitrogen) passing through a leak opening create a turbulent flow with detectable high-frequency components. Using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester and deluxe headphones, the operator can hear this as a rushing sound which will get louder the closer he/she gets to the source of the leak.
The noise level will also be indicated on the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester’s display, again allowing the user to locate the source by tracing the volume of the noise.
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can be shielded from conflicting ultrasound ambient noise using the rubber focusing probe which limits the instrument’s reception field.
Valve Seat Leak Detection
The user can check valves for leaks or blockages whilst the valve is in operation.
Heat Exchanger, Boilers and Condensers
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can be used to check condenser tubes and heat exchanger tubes for leaks, even in noisy environments. These tubes can be tested using three methods:
- Vacuum: listen for the sound caused by air being drawn into the leak
- Pressure: inspect the tube while the system is offline by utilising air pressure around the system and scanning for the rushing sound caused by a leaking tube
- Ultratone: this method is particularly useful for checking heat exchanger tubes; the shell side of the exchanger is flooded with ultrasound using a powerful high-frequency transmitter, this sound will follow the path towards the leak, allowing the user to find the leaking tube
Steam Trap Inspection
The user is able to detect blow-by, machine gunning, oversized traps and line blockages. The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester converts the ultrasonic elements of steam traps into an audible range allowing him/her to hear the sources of the faults through the headphones; the level of noise is also viewable via the display. Steam traps can be inspected while they are in operation.
Bearing Testing
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can be used to identify bearing failure; it is able to identify faults before this would be possible using traditional heat and vibration methods. This simple method of checking bearings requires no prior training and only one test point; the operator is able to monitor sound quality and amplitude changes in order to identify the earliest stages of bearing failure.
Mechanical Inspection
It is possible to inspect pumps, motors, compressors, gears and gearboxes using the UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester. This tool can be used to identify cavitation in pumps, compressor valve leakage and missing gear teeth.
Electrical Inspection
The UE Systems Ultraprobe® 100 Leak Detector & Valve Tester can inspect switchgear, transformers, circuit breakers, bussbars, relays, junction boxes and insulators for arcing, tracking and corona discharge.
Electrical discharges produce ultrasound at the point of emission; this can be heard as a frying/ buzzing sound through the headset. By scanning the atmosphere, the user can find the source of electrical discharges by following volume increases.
