The HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester is a high voltage tester with a limited current capable of safely and non-destructively testing MOV arresters, insulators, and an array of parts and materials. These models can be used to test MOV arrester classes up to 25kV AC and have a DC output voltage range of 0 to 30kV. The two options listed in the drop-down menu above differ in regards to the voltage of their charging adapters, please see the ‘What’s Included?’ section for further details.
The HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester can be used to identify non-visible problems in arresters and distribution board, allowing him/her to troubleshoot the source of problems such as blinking lights, and radio and television interference. MOVs can also be tested for shorts and sparkover voltages.
As previously mentioned, this instrument is capable of testing MOV arresters up to a 25kV AC class; it can also be used to test bell type, distribution class polymers, and cross arm pin insulators within the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester’s voltage range, as well as fuses, transformer bushings and tank lids. Please note that the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester is unable to check gap type or hybrid MOV/ gap type arresters such as Hubbell Optima and Cooper VariGAP.
The HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester applies a voltage to these components and measures the leakage current. The HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester’s two test leads are connected to the top and bottom of the arrester and a DC voltage is passed through it. This voltage can be increased allowing the operator to ascertain the exact voltage at which the arrester conducts. The applied voltage and the leakage current are viewable via the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester’s bright, easy-to-read LED displays.
The LED meter for leakage current is scaled in 5mA steps and has a maximum reading of 50mA; if the current exceeds 50mA the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester will show a ‘full-on’ display. The LED voltage scale is displayed in DC, with AC equivalent increments. Via the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester’s LED displays the user is able to view the current leakage for any applied voltage; he/she can also determine the maximum voltage an arrester can support when at full conduction.
In addition to troubleshooting distribution boards and MOVs, the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester can be used to ascertain the condition of arresters and insulators for quality assurance purposes, such as when purchasing new stock, and for the purpose of identifying components that are suitable for reuse. As a result, the user is able to stretch his/her materials budget.
Further to this, the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester can be used as a training tool for demonstrating the function of arresters and other components, as well as the way they respond to increasing voltages.
The application capabilities, as well as the HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester’s portable and lightweight design, makes it suitable for use in the field, transformer rebuild shops, maintenance yards and training facilities.
Furthermore, this tester is supplied with a pivoting handle and belt clip facilitating handsfree usage and is powered by a sealed, lead-acid, rechargeable 12VDC battery which is capable of providing three to five days of life from a single charge. The HD Electric Hi-Test MOV Arrester and Leakage Tester is also equipped with an Auto Shut-off feature designed to preserve battery life.
