HD Electric (FACT) Feeder Ammeter Clear Test

The HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test (FACT) is used to detect ground connections prior to re-energising distribution feeder circuits.

It is a requirement that when distribution feeder circuits are taken out of work for maintenance bolted grounds are installed on all three phases at every location where work is being performed. Once this requirement has been fulfilled the engineer is able to replace cross-arms, insulators and/or transformers. When work has been completed the added grounds must be removed prior to circuit re-energisation; failure to remove grounds can cause damage at the location or at the connected substation. The HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test can be used to check that absolutely all of the added ground connections have been removed.

The HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test is applied before substation circuit breakers have been closed and can be connected along the feeder circuit or at the substation.

The HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test energises the feeder circuit at a low secondary voltage and measures the resulting current flow. This automatic test sequence steps through and tests all three phases in sequence; it also performs an automatic self-test prior to testing the circuit. Its internal diagnostics confirm correct operation.

Via the LCD display, the user can see the condition of each phase and any detected shorts. The HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test is able to differentiate between currents drawn by transformers and currents caused by remaining grounds. Detected ground connections are indicated on the LCD display. In addition to this, the HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test’s display indicates the ammeter’s current and shows instructions and messages, adding to its ease of use.

As well as detecting connected grounds, the HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test will automatically detect incorrect polarity.

As the HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test is able to differentiate between currents drawn by grounds and currents drawn by transformers, it is possible to use this instrument to test circuits with equipment such as transformers, capacitor banks and lightning arresters still installed. Furthermore, as the HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test only requires a 120V AC 60Hz power supply and has a limited current (5A output) it can be safely connected to any grounded or un-grounded circuit. Also adding to the HD Electric Feeder Ammeter Clear Test’s practicality is its portable, one-person design.
