The HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker is a compact capacitor tester suitable for identifying failing or partially failing pole-mounted or disconnected individual substation capacitors.

Like the other models in HD Electric’s range of Cap Check Testers, this model is able to apply a test voltage ranging from 50V to 480V AC to capacitors in order to identify incipient faults, failures and ruptures, as well as ascertain the ‘true’ health of the capacitor. A minimum of 50V is required to find incipient faults caused by a shorting between individual plates, whereas a voltage of 480V AC enables the determination of the ‘true’ internal health of the capacitor.

However, unlike its sister models, the HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker includes heavy-duty, spring-loaded aluminium hanging hooks, allowing it to be attached to the side of a bucket.

The HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker is available in a standard kit or as part of a transformer kit (60Hz and 50Hz versions available). The transformer kit includes a Ø2” CT002/III Current Transformer with cord and plug; as a result, the HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker Transformer Kit can be used to test individual capacitors in multi-can banks without changing the energised leads. Nevertheless, both kits are able to check single capacitors and/or capacitor banks connected in series and in parallel.

Using the HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker as a preventative maintenance tool allows the operators to identify and locate faulty capacitors thereby preventing potential outages and/or dangerous situations caused by these units. It can also be used in the lab to check new capacitors prior to installation, thereby preventing the accidental installation of faulty units. As a result, downtime and clean-up costs are reduced.

Furthermore, as individual faulty capacitors can be identified, this prevents functional units from being replaced as well, thereby reducing costs. 

Finally, the HD Electric Cap Check III Distribution/ Substation Capacitor Checker provides excellent repeatability and accuracy. It is a portable, precise and practical capacitor tester suitable for measuring pole-mounted and/ or disconnected individual substation capacitors.
