The Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well with Built-in Reference Thermometry is able to perform all the same temperature calibration tasks as its sister product the Fluke 9172-X-256 Field Metrology Well.
However, this metrology well also includes integrated reference thermometry which facilitates the instrument’s ability to accept and read 100Ω, 25Ω and 10Ω PRTs, including all of Fluke’s PRTs. This particular aspect of the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is supplied with a traceable, accredited calibration and is able to read PRTs and other temperature probes to an accuracy of up to ±0.0014°C (dependent on temperature and PRT/ probe type). In addition to this, it allows the user to utilise the accuracies of PRTs as this feature ensures that the instrument is able to accept unique ITS-90 characterisation coefficients.
Like its sister product, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well with Built-in Reference Thermometry is available in seven models, each with a different disc insert; please see the table below for further details.

These disc inserts facilitate the user’s ability to add probes of varying diameters to the well. This instrument is able to calibrate thermometers, temperature probes and thermal switches. Furthermore, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256’s well has a depth of 203mm ensuring that instruments can be properly immersed, thereby reducing the possibility of stem conduction errors at high temperatures.
The depth of the well also ensures that the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to provide the user with a homogeneous temperature zone of 60mm (from the bottom of the well) with an axial/ vertical uniformity of up to ±0.05°C. This instrument also offers a radial uniformity of (up to) ±0.01°C. The inclusion of Fluke’s patent-pending proprietary electronics and dual-zone control (analogue and digital) both contribute to the maintenance of temperature uniformities and work to reduce loading effects to ±0.01°C over the full temperature range.
In addition to this, these features also help to maintain the stability of the heat source produced by the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well. Dependent on temperature, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 has a stability of ±0.005°C to ±0.01°C. It has a temperature range of 35°C to 425°C.
Furthermore, the well-design, proprietary electronics and dual-zone control, as well as the traceable, accredited calibration (using traceable, accredited PRTs) that this instrument is supplied with, all help to maintain its display accuracy of ±0.2°C (at 425°C), ensure its repeatability, and reduce the effects of hysteresis to 0.04°C.
Subsequently, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is compliant with the six critical components of performance outlined in the European Metrology Community’s EA-10/13 document:
As such, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to offer the user the stability, uniformity and accuracy of a bath temperature calibrator but with the practicality and convenience of a dry well tester. This instrument’s design has been modelled on that of dry well calibrators and is therefore compact, rugged and lightweight. It is suitable for use in a variety of industrial environments and difficult-to-access places.
Its large, LCD display allows the user to view the block temperature, cut-out temperature, reference thermometer temperature, stability criteria and ramp rate quickly and easily. These features, functions and settings can be easily configured using the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well’s numeric keypad and onscreen menus. The Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well also includes four pre-programmed calibration tasks into which the user is able to enter up to eight temperature setpoints with ‘ramp and soak’ times between each one. Furthermore, the integrated Switch Test protocol can be used to zero-in on ‘dead-band’ for thermal switches.
In addition to configuring the instrument via the front panel, it can be adjusted remotely via the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well’s RS-232 interface and the supplied Fluke Interface-It Software. This interface and software allow the user to view results remotely from his/her computer as well as access the instrument’s features, functions and settings.
Alternatively, the Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well can be used with Fluke’s MET / TEMP II Software (NOT included) to perform automatic calibrations of RTDs, thermocouples and thermistors.
Lastly; adding to this product's adaptability is its ability to display menus in English, French or Chinese; the inclusion of a function button optimised to allow the user to select between °C and °F measurement units also allows the user to tailor the instrument to his/her requirements.
The Fluke 9172-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well with Built-in Reference Thermometry is an accurate, versatile, reliable and resilient temperature calibrator, ideal for use across a variety of industry sectors.
