Like its sister product, the Fluke 9171-X-256 Field Metrology Well, this instrument has been optimised for accuracy and to this end includes a number of features designed to maintain repeatability, as well as reduce temperature gradients, loading effects and hysteresis.
The inclusion of Fluke’s patent-pending proprietary electronics, dual-zone control (digital and analogue), and the significant depth of its well, all work to improve temperature uniformity. The Fluke 9171-X-R-256 includes a well with a depth of 203mm facilitating the instrument’s ability to provide a homogeneous temperature zone of 60mm (from the bottom of the well) with an axial/ vertical uniformity of ±0.02°C at (0°C). In addition to this, the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to provide a radial uniformity between wells of ±0.01°C.
The depth of the well also ensures that temperature probes can be fully immersed ensuring that all their characteristics, such as the location and size of the sensor, the width and thermal mass of the probe, as well as any external leads, are included in the calibration. Again this improves the accuracy of the calibration procedure.
Similarly to its sister product, the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well has been calibrated using traceable, accredited PRTS to ensure its display accuracy of ±0.1°C. Further improving its accuracy is the inclusion of integrated reference thermometry, not found on the Fluke 9171-X-R-256's sister product the Fluke 9171-X-256 Field Metrology Well. This too has been calibrated to traceable, accredited standards and facilitates the instrument’s ability to accept and read 100Ω, 25Ω and 10Ω PRTs. It is able to read these PRTs and other thermometer probes to an accuracy of ±0.006 (at 0°C). It is compatible with all PRTs produced by Fluke and is able to accept unique ITS-90 characterisation coefficients from these instruments, thereby allowing the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well to utilise the accuracy of these PRTs.
The precise calibration of this instrument, as well as its well-design and inclusion of dual-zone control and proprietary electronics, minimises loading effects (down to ±0.005°C) and reduces the effects of hysteresis to 0.025°C. These features also ensure that the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to provide a heat source that is stable to ±0.005°C over the instrument’s full temperature range.
They also ensure that the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to maintain conformity with the six critical components of performance detailed in the European Metrology Community’s EA-10/13 document. These include:
As a result, the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well is able to provide the user with the stability, accuracy and uniformity of a bath temperature calibrator but with the convenience and practicality of a dry well tester. This instrument, like a dry well tester, has been optimised to be as compact, rugged and lightweight as possible. Its design expands the instrument’s scope-for-use, making it suitable for applications in rugged industrial environments and/or hard-to-access places.
Adding to this product’s practicality is the inclusion of four pre-programmed calibration tasks into which the user is able to program up to eight temperature set points with ‘ramp and soak’ times between each point. The instrument also includes a Switch Test protocol for zeroing in on the ‘dead-band’ for thermal switches.
These tasks and protocols can be accessed and adjusted using the instrument’s numeric keypad, large, LCD display and on-screen menus. The user is also able to select between °C or °F using the dedicated function button.
Via the large, LCD display the user can view the block temperature, cut-out temperature, built-in reference thermometer’s temperature, stability criteria and the ramp rate. These settings may also be viewed, accessed and adjusted using the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well’s RS-232 interface and the supplied Fluke Model 9930 Interface-It Software. This interface and software facilitate the user’s ability to view results and run calibration tasks remotely from his/her PC.
Alternatively, the Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well can be used with Fluke’s MET/ TEMP II Software (NOT included) in order to perform automatic calibrations of RTDs, thermocouples and thermistors.
The Fluke 9171-X-R-256 Field Metrology Well with Built-in Reference Thermometry is a versatile, adaptable, accurate instrument contained within in a compact, lightweight and rugged unit. It is ideal for calibrating an array of temperature sensing instruments within a variety of industries.
