About Megger Socket Testers

Megger socket testers are compact, plug-in devices designed to assess the wiring integrity of electrical outlets, particularly the UK standard BS1363 13A 3-pin sockets. They detect various wiring faults, including missing wires, incorrect connections, and reversed polarity, ensuring that sockets are correctly wired for safe operation.

When inserted into a socket, these testers evaluate the connections and provide immediate feedback through visual indicators?typically LEDs?and, in some models, audible alerts. For instance, the Megger MST220 uses tri-coloured LED and sounds to indicate the status.

These socket testers are widely used in various scenarios:

  • Post-Installation Checks: After installing or replacing sockets, they verify correct wiring before full electrical inspections.
  • Routine Maintenance: Electricians and maintenance personnel use them to ensure outlets remain in safe working condition.
  • Equipment Commissioning: Before connecting appliances or equipment, testers confirm that the power supply is correctly wired, preventing potential damage or hazards.
