On the right, a man with dark hair and beard in a green waterproof jacket is standing outside and holding a FLIR Scout TKx up to his eye. On the left, large white text on a blue background reads "Using a FLIR TKx As a Security Aid on Manufacturing Sites". Beneath it smaller white text reads "Read More".

Despite optimisation for outdoor applications such as ecological investigations and conservation efforts, the FLIR Scout TKx Thermal Imaging Monocular has proven an invaluable security tool, particularly within the industrial and petrochemical sectors. Companies are not only accountable for protecting their assets but their employees too. In fact, employers are legally responsible for safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of all their staff, including security personnel.[1] This is where the thermal power, ergonomics, and simplicity of the FLIR Scout TKx can be leveraged to great effect. A portable, easy-to-use FLIR thermal security camera, the Scout TKx detects and illustrates heat sources within a scene; therefore, making it easier to identify potential issues such as overheating equipment, animal intrusions, or human trespassing. Consequently, improved situational awareness protects both your assets and security staff from attack. Discover why the FLIR Scout TKx is an essential thermal security camera for industrial and petrochemical companies.

Industrial Security: Why Sites Need a Security Thermal Camera

Security Thermal Imaging Cameras Protect Staff

A 2021 Working the Doors study investigating violence (physical and verbal) against security professionals in the UK found that 90% of the (viable) 1224 responders had been physically assaulted by members of the public while at work. 24% of surveyed UK security professionals attested to experiencing violence once or twice yearly; 36% report being assaulted monthly; while 26% are attacked weekly; and 4% assert they are victims of public violence every time they attend work. Sadly, only 10% of those questioned have never been attacked at work.[2]

UK law makes it clear that employers are legally responsible for the safety of their employees, as expressed in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 elaborates on this, explaining that employers must utilise planning, organisation, and monitoring to ensure the safest possible work environments. As an employer, protecting your patrol agents from violence and abiding by the law is reason enough to invest in a security thermal camera. A thermal imaging monocular, such as the FLIR Scout TKx, detects heat sources, such as body heat, allowing your security team to identify potential intruders even in complete darkness. As a result, teams can enact safe protocols, reducing the risk of violence to their persons, while protecting company assets.

Prevent Theft & Vandalism with Security Thermal Imaging Cameras

It is estimated that theft and vandalism cost the construction industry approximately £400 million annually.[3] The Chartered Institute of Building’s report, Crime in the Construction Industry, surveyed 1100 construction workers mostly based in the UK. It uncovered that 92% of respondents had suffered thefts from sites. 20.5% of surveyed construction professionals report experiencing weekly thefts; 42.7% said they suffer monthly thefts; while 28.7% attest to thefts occurring annually. Similarly, 91% of respondents have encountered vandalism with 18.8% reporting weekly instances; 42.8% monthly; and 29.8% yearly.[4]

Industrial sites are also experiencing a rise in thefts, specifically for valuable copper cables. Hampshire and Isle of Wight police explain that there has been a 20% rise in this type of crime compared to 2023 and highlight that the following locations are particularly susceptible to these thefts:

  • Railway lines
  • Electricity sub-stations
  • Water/sewage works
  • Hospitals
  • Building sites
  • Scrap yards
  • Historical sites
  • Cemeteries
  • War memorials
  • Farms
  • Solar farms
  • Churches
  • Battery storage facilities[5]

For this reason, it is imperative your industrial security personnel are equipped with the tools necessary for preventing costly thefts and vandalism. A FLIR thermal security camera, such as the Scout TKx, is perfect for improving situational awareness and spotting intruders from distances of up to 90m.

French Metallurgical Plant Pioneers FLIR Scout TKx Thermal Camera for Security

A metallurgical plant in France has implemented the FLIR Scout TKx Thermal Monocular as part of its industrial security. The site was subject to unwanted night intrusions, some of which were challenging to address due to a lack of light coverage and a limited fixed camera system. The Scout TKx Monocular provides a solution as this FLIR thermal security camera allows patrol staff to visualise heat distribution across a scene. This means agents can identify heat sources, such as trespassing humans, in dim or dark areas and at a safe distance of up to 90m. Consequently, agents may take measures to intercept intruders without undue risk to their person.

In addition to revealing unauthorised individuals and offering additional protection to security staff, FLIR’s Scout TKx Security Thermal Camera makes it easier to conduct comprehensive inspections once alarms have been triggered. As a consequence, the FLIR Scout TKx helps patrol teams significantly with protecting manufacturing secrets, goods, and raw materials, as well as avoiding sabotage, loss of production, and accidents.
