Red Squirrel groups across the UK are using thermal imaging in their plight to protect the breed and the broader ecological system.
Red Squirrel Ranger, Jerry Moss, is employed to protect the species in Cumbria. He is also a volunteer and trustee for the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Group which is a registered charity specifically set up to save red squirrels living in the woodlands of the lake district.
Jerry has used thermal imaging cameras for years to locate wildlife and conduct population surveys. For Jerry, the introduction of thermal imaging cameras into his woodland work has proved a game changer, making it easy to spot small mammals in trees and undergrowth by picking up on their heat signatures.
“Using the thermal camera, you can easily see from a distance without disturbing the wildlife, enabling me to observe behaviours and assess populations much more easily” says Jerry.
Being outdoors, day-in-day-out means Jerry is well placed to sample Hikmicro’s outdoor range of thermal imaging products, putting them to the test in the Cumbrian weather.
Earlier this month PASS Ltd’s Dave Atkins and Hikmicro’s Paul Hodson visited Jerry onsite in Shap, Penrith area. They gave him a bundle of Hikmicro models to try, including thermal imaging monoculars and optics.
Jerry comments that “they are fantastic tools [to add to] my armoury and well-suited to the outdoor rugged applications of a wildlife Ranger.
They allow me to track and locate wildlife in all weather conditions. With good battery life and fantastic thermal sensitivity and resolution for the price point”.
It is without a doubt that the work carried out by Jerry and the Penrith and District Red Squirrel Groups, which includes controlling grey squirrel populations and monitoring and preserving protected areas, has helped to protect these enchanting creatures, and prevent their extinction.
Lately, Jerry has been working with Terry Abraham, a local award-winning filmmaker and photographer, on his project to create a documentary titled “Cumbrian Red”. Jerry will feature in the documentary set to be released in 2023. Terry’s film will give an insight into the world of our red squirrels and the struggles they face.
In support of the work that Jerry and the red squirrel group of volunteers are doing, PASS Ltd is offering a discount across the whole of our Hikmicro Thermal Imaging Monocular and Optics range.
