White text on the left of the image reads '5 Reasons to Calibrate Your Flue Gas'. It is on a dark blue background. The yellow Gas Safety Week logo is in the bottom right corner and the right side of the banner is taken up with an image of a flue gas analyser that has been opened up: one side is blue casing and one side is a circuit board. Hands hold a black component above the side with the circuit board.

Every plumber and gas engineer knows that when installing gas appliances a flue gas analyser (FGA) is essential! Using an FGA, you can verify that the appliance is working safely and that the installation is not producing dangerous levels of harmful gases that could jeopardise the safety of your clients and their community. That is why proper maintenance and calibration of your FGA is vital to ensuring that this critical part of your job is as accurate as possible.

Why Calibrate Your Flue Gas Analyser?

Here are five reasons why you should calibrate your flue gas analyser.

1. Precision

All testing and measuring instruments must be calibrated to ensure that the instrument is accurate and within the limits specified by the manufacturer. Calibration reduces measurement uncertainty. Regularly scheduled calibration will keep your equipment in proper condition, allowing you to carry out accurate measurements.

2. Standards

The British Standards BS7967 and BS EN: 50379 for flue gas analysers clearly state that FGAs should be professionally calibrated. Flue gas analysers that are outside of their calibration date are NOT to be used!

3. Penalties

If the Gas Register catches you using an out-of-calibration flue gas analyser, at best, you will be required to re-do all of the measurements gathered using that instrument. At worst, if an appliance you have tested is subject to an investigation you could incur serious penalties.

4. Specifications

Usually, manufacturers advise how often their devices should be calibrated. Some makes and models, for example, Anton Flue Gas Analysers, actually warn you of their calibration due date. These FGAs will display warning messages and print the calibration due date on every report.

5. Safety

If you do decide to use your flue gas analyser outside of its calibration period, it's important to note that, in addition to breaking the law, you are putting yourself and your customers at serious risk.
