At PASS we get asked a lot of questions about the products we sell. To help answer these questions we are putting together a range of answers.

Test leads FAQ

How does the GS38 regulation affect the test leads I should use?

Most leads being produced and sold in the UK meet the current GS38 recommendations. The common changes suggested are:

  • Guards which are shaped to prevent contact with live conductors
  • The metal probe tip should not exceed 4mm and it is recommended that the tip is 2mm
  • The leads should have suitable high breaking capacity such as a current limiting resistor or fuse.

These guidance notes were published by the HSE and by following these guidelines you will be working in full compliance with the law.

Will the length of the cable affect my accuracy?

The length of the cable will minutely affect the readings that your tester will give. This can be easily solved by plugging in your leads and then zeroing your tester. For full details on how to do this consult your manual.

How do you test for R2 with the new test leads?

Testing the R2 with the new test leads can be as easy as before by simply using the correct probe for the test. By using a long probe you can ensure your own safety as well as providing accurate readings.

Are most test leads 4mm compatible?

As standard, most test equipment comes with a  4mm socket for leads, whether it’s a multimeter or multifunction tester. This means that you don’t necessarily need to buy the same brand leads as your tester and can use another manufacturer. But be wary, Megger have recently adopted a new 2mm connection with their MFT1700 Series. If in doubt, get in touch and we’ll help alleviate any confusion.
