Well, everyone’s got a hobby.
In what’s certainly an interesting story to say the least, several media outlets are reporting that an electrician from Hull is being kept in custody over his habit of making live bombs.
Paul Smith, who lives in the Hull area, was said to be in possession of two pipe bombs, 20 to 30 detonators, two battery packs and a ‘sophisticated halogen light operating trigger’ when police searched his house.
The officers who searched the property were acting on complaints by neighbours, who were apparently sick of their car alarms being set off by Smith’s bombs.
When he was arrested, Smith said: “I don't know what all the fuss is about. Everyone knows I make small bombs. Some people collect stamps, I make small bombs. Even my birthday cake was bomb shaped.”
Although making bombs isn’t by any means an acceptable pastime, it’s believed the interest of Smith is actually not to harm anybody with the devices, and he just finds them fascinating.
His defence barrister David Gordon said: "He is a somewhat naïve 40-year-old who thought he would be allowed to conduct his hobby in this way without the police becoming involved.
"He has been in custody now for five months and does not find it at all pleasurable. He is not a terrorist. He does not have any radical religious or political opinions. He does have an unhealthy interest in explosive devices."
As a result of his bomb-making Smith has been ordered by a judge to complete a 15-month supervision order, a drug rehabilitation programme and 150 hours of community service.
